The Revenge Of The Coconut with Mike Davies
What a strange name for a radio show, but there is a simple explanation. In 1987 just after I had joined Kol Ha Shalom I mentioned on air that because of my very short hair, and also that I was brown from sunbathing, I had once been called a ‘coconut’. This announcement was heard by Dave Asher and as most DJs on Kol Ha Shalom had a nickname, Coconut became my name. The ‘Revenge’ section is a reflection of the name of the Radio Caroline ship, the Ross Revenge.
My show on RadioPlus features a variety of music, mainly from the 1960s to the 1980s. My original music loves were Tamla Motown, and British Mod music from groups like The Who, Small Faces and The Kinks. My first radio shows were made in the 1980s, so music from that decade is featured a lot in my show. I do try to play lesser known music as much as possible, what is the point in playing the same old mainstream material, when much more is available?
I also feature some Israeli music that I played back in the 1980s on Kol Ha Shalom, and occasionally I will do a feature show with music from the soundtrack of a film or TV series, or on a particular theme. Make sure to listen in every week to hear what I have found in my record collection. Yes, I still have all my vinyl record collection, as well as many hundreds of CDs.
